Urban Farming in Toronto

“Fresh ingredients taste better” is the guiding principle of the farm to table movement and nothing could be more natural than using your own roof for growing herbs, vegetables or even hops. The Avling Kitchen and Brewery in Toronto has proven this with their 400 m² roof garden that supplies all kinds of ingredients for their own brewery and restaurant.

The former wholesale fruit, vegetable and flower market in the Valby district of Copenhagen will be replaced by the year 2025 by a modern residential area with approx. 3,000 mixed use apartments, in addition to shops, cafés and offices. With an area of 23,000 m², Grønttorvet Park is the green heart of the project, covering the underground car park that is 9,000 m² in size. 250 fruit trees are a tasty reminder in the true sense of the word of the former use of the site, as visitors to the park can pick the fruit.

Greening the barrel roof of a winery

Bodegas Ramón Bilbao in Haro, a winery steeped in tradition and innovation, is located in the ancient wine-growing region of Rioja Alta in the north east of Spain. Apart from its world-renowned exclusive wines, it now has a green roof that is just as exclusive. By using three different ZinCo systems, a perfectly fitting green roof was installed on the barrel roof of the new winery, ranging from flat to steep-pitched, and covering an area of about 2,000 m² and arched up to 35°.

Olea All Suite Hotel on Zakynthos

The Greek island of Zakynthos is characterised by rich vegetation, which enables the Olea All Suite Hotel and its 7,170 m² to blend easily and naturally into the hilly landscape. The reason is that the roofs on all of the individual buildings – an area of about 2,000 m² in total – are greened, row for row. In between the buildings we have 4,000 m² of refreshing pool water and the almost 100-year old olive trees (Lat. Olea europaea), which give this expansive hotel complex its name.

Sustainability Assessment

The Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) has been created as an instrument which reliably shows the environmental impact of construction products throughout their complete life cycle and describes their functional and technical properties.

ZinCo GmbH entered the project “Biodiversity Green Roof” in this year’s FOCUS Innovation Award.

Roof terrace flooring on pedestals

Pedestals are perfect for roof walkway and terrace floorings. The reason is that roofs often do not have the load-bearing capacity to carry the weight of the base layer, the bedding material and the flooring, and the material is also awkward to transport and distribute with this design. On the other hand, it is easy to use the well-known ZinCo Elefeet® pedestals that are now being launched on the market in a new and expanded version that includes a rail system.

Parisian roof terrace at the Pavillon d’Armenonville

The Pavillon d’Armenonville in Paris offers an exceptional and prestigious backdrop for corporate and private events. The architecturally appealing building hosts guests in six lounges and in a stylish 515 m² roof garden. A host of different vegetables, herbs and edible flowers are grown there in 26 plant beds in which the ZinCo system build-up “Urban Farming” has been installed. In this way, the garden delivers tasty ingredients, fresh from the rooftop, for the gourmet kitchen of the caterer and event manager, Butard Enescot.

Don’t we have the best arguments for change right now?

How can we succeed in changing to a city worth living in now?" asks the internationally renowned landscape architect and urban planner Herbert Dreiseitl, who has been working for decades for sustainability and healthy and social conditions. Dreiseitl sheds light on the ideas of the "Climate Corona Treaty", the "Healthy Cities in a Postpandemic World" or the "15-Minute City" and reports on new european funding programmes for a green future for cities.

Former department store converted

A lawn for playing and sunbathing in the centre of the town and on a rooftop too. How is that done? As part of the conversion to a modern residential and commercial property, the former Hertie department store was given a completely new structure. A green roof with an area of 850 m² was created by making a deep cut into what was originally a rectangular cuboid building. The ZinCo system build-up “Roof Garden” with Aquatec® was perfect here thanks to its low height, and it was professionally installed by the roof gardeners GRÜN+DACH.
