Car park roof in Ħamrun, Malta

Climbing the steps to the roof of the car park at the Misraħ is-Sebgħa ta' Ġunju 1919 Place in Ħamrun will bring you to a restful green paradise where the interplay of colour, form and light will help you forget the hustle and bustle of the surrounding city. Architects Doric Studio/Living Walls have created a spectacular feature from what was previously a desolate car park, therefore providing enormous value added for the residents within this community.

The risk of flooding in towns and cities is growing as a result of urban sealing and the increase in heavy rain events. The Zinco system build-ups Stormwater Management Roof and the NEW Sponge City Roof can help here.

A roof can play a decisive role in the water management of a building, an entire urban district and a city itself provided it is specifically used for its water retention capacity. Temporary water retention on a roof is effective for absorbing heavy rainwater and draining it in a controlled manner and in so doing preventing flooding and the sewerage system from becoming overwhelmed. Additional water storage on a roof is useful for vegetation too, which absorbs and evaporates the available water. As a result, the vegetation becomes more species rich and the surrounding area is cooled.

Furniture factory in the Norwegian woods

Yet again, thinking outside the box has produced a new reality the like of which has never been seen before. Visionary architects, the Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG), are no strangers to this. BIG has designed the most environmentally friendly and transparent furniture factory in the world for furniture manufacturers, Vestre AS, that is at the same time a tourist destination and an experience centre for all visitors. That is truly unique!

The 27th United Nations Climate Change conference (COP27) with representatives of more than 190 nations is being held from 6 November until 18 November 2022 in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt.

The countries are struggling for a concrete realisation of the pledged climate protection goals, above all the limitation of the global temperature rise to 1.5°C. Not only representatives of the countries do attend, also climate protection organisations and journalists are there. About 30.000 people are expected to attend the two-week conference.

Valletta Design Cluster, Malta

950 trees, shrubs, ground cover plants, climbing plants, flowers and grasses across a roof area of 495 m² on a 400-year-old building – the design of the roof garden on the Valletta Design Cluster is as rich in detail and artistic as the entire infrastructure project in Valletta, Malta’s city of culture. The Design Cluster is the new heart of the artistic and cultural scene in Malta and the inspired roof garden is open to the public as a community space.

People and insects on a green roof

Stormwater retention, evaporation capacity, biodiversity – people need the ecosystem performance of green roofs.

Where will the journey take us?

People need sound ecosystems to live in. The catastrophic flooding that occurred in Germany in the summer of 2021 is one of the most painful experiences that will accelerate a change in attitude among policy makers and within society.  And, it is not before time. Decisive measures aimed at adapting to climate change, which involve the creation of a liveable green and blue infrastructure, are long overdue - even though the technical ways and means are here already.

Urban Farming in Toronto

“Fresh ingredients taste better” is the guiding principle of the farm to table movement and nothing could be more natural than using your own roof for growing herbs, vegetables or even hops. The Avling Kitchen and Brewery in Toronto has proven this with their 400 m² roof garden that supplies all kinds of ingredients for their own brewery and restaurant.

The former wholesale fruit, vegetable and flower market in the Valby district of Copenhagen will be replaced by the year 2025 by a modern residential area with approx. 3,000 mixed use apartments, in addition to shops, cafés and offices. With an area of 23,000 m², Grønttorvet Park is the green heart of the project, covering the underground car park that is 9,000 m² in size. 250 fruit trees are a tasty reminder in the true sense of the word of the former use of the site, as visitors to the park can pick the fruit.
